How to bring more fulfillment to your life

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

What’s happening for you right now? Where are you stuck in your life and what where would you like to move forward? If you’re not sure where to start, a great way to prioritise is to use something called The Wheel of Life.

The Wheel of Life is used by many in the self-development world to help their clients understand what’s going on in their life, where there’s imbalance and where more focus is needed.
Where do you put your focus?

All too often we get so caught up in one or two areas of our lives, and other areas get neglected.

If you’re all about career:

Are you all about doing your job perfectly, better than anyone else? About proving that you are good enough for your position/promotion? About showing everyone how dedicated you are? At the same time, are you finding that you’re not getting enough sleep? That you’re more irritable than you used to be? That you’ve constantly got headaches or some other irritation that is making you uncomfortable? Is your partner telling you that you need to make more time together? Are your person affairs a mess?

If you’re all about giving to others:

Do you always put other people’s needs ahead of your own? Do you always go out of your way to help others? Will you always say Yes if someone asks you to help? At the same time, do you find that you never have enough time to finish your own tasks and jobs? That your to-do list never gets any smaller? That you feel like you’re running around like a headless chicken the whole time? That you’re incredibly tired all the time? That your efforts are not fully appreciated and that others get rewarded ahead of you?

Do you see what I mean?

Print out or draw out your own wheel of life and and mark along each line, or spoke of the wheel, where your level of satisfaction is:

0 = total dissatisfaction

10 = total satisfaction

Once you’ve done that, draw along the dotted line from your dot to close the section and colour it in.

You’ll be pleased to know that no one’s wheel is ever perfectly round, as by the very nature of balance, you always have to work at it.

Notice where you have the greatest imbalances. Choose the segment that you’d most like to increase and answer the questions below that are relevant:

What do you know to be true about this low segment?
What can you appreciate about this low score?
What would it feel/be like if the segment were 2-3 points higher? What would you see happening in your life? What would be possible? (Take some time to journal about each separately.)
What’s one action can you take to move this score higher?
How are you going to do it?
When are you going to do it?
What support or resources do you need to activate?

Hi Ania, this is a clever tool! Thank you for sharing it with us! Its made me realise I spend far too much of my energy and stress (which gives me constant headaches) on my career… this doesnt get rewarded! Its about time I take the jump and make a change! All my focus is on career which makes other areas suffer such as relationships, health and physical exercise. This surely isnt the way life should be! Work – Life balance needs to be restored! Hope you are well and happy! 😉

Quite right, Misia! Working for money is a necessity as we all have the basic needs of warmth and food, but it’s not what life is ultimately about and, most of the time, it gives us very little fulfilment. Like you say, this is a very useful tool for identifying imbalance! Enjoy the process of restoring your balance – you have so much to give to the world and to receive from it! 🙂 xx
