If you’re hoping to read tips for bagging the likes of the well-oiled Ronaldo, I’m sorry to disappoint. If you want to learn something about the benefits of the ancient Ayurveda institution of oil pulling and get some advice on how to ‘pull’ oil without gagging on it, then hopefully I can help.
Why would you want an oily pull?
You may well have heard about it in terms of its sparkly white impact on your dents (which may indeed help with the bagging smoothy here or any other stud for that matter) but it also claims to cure Mouth & Gum Disease; Stiff Joints; Allergies; Asthma; High Blood Sugar; Constipation; Migraines; Bronchitis; Eczema; Heart, Kidney, Lung Diseases; Leukemia; Arthritis; Meningitis; Insomnia; Menopause (hormonal issues); Cancer; AIDS; Chronic Infections; Varicose Veins; High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Polio; Cracked Heels; Sinusitis.
Wow. While I – and the rest of the world – would love to think it might cure cancer, I first read about it for another of its many benefits: reducing the off-putting appearance of Keratosis Pilaris, a skin condition otherwise delightfully known as ‘chicken skin’. One in four people get this – most often on their upper arms and thighs – and it is caused by the excessive production of the protein keratin, resulting in skin plugs building up in the hair follicle and causing bumpy skin and often red spots. There is no cure, just an endless list of potential aids including exfoliating, moisturising, applying lemon juice and so on. KP sufferers – like other apparently incurable condition sufferers – are usually willing to give most things a go.
So, if you’ve been looking for a miracle cure for any of the above, let me explain the process.
What to do.
First thing in the morning, before you have eaten anything, put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth. You can start with less if all that freaks you out. There’s lots of chat online about which oil to use – have a look at this website http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/oil_pulling.html – but I’ve been using sunflower oil. Draw the oil through your teeth and around your mouth continuously for 15-20 minutes. Try not to clench your teeth like I did to start with: if it feels stressful, you’re probably not doing it quite right. Gradually it starts foaming until it becomes milky white. The idea is that all the toxins in your body are being drawn out so, despite what you might have been told, DO NOT SWALLOW. It takes a bit of planning to fit it in with your routine and it isn’t the most pleasant way to spend your time but you will get used to it.
The internet is full of ravings about benefits as diverse as Liz Taylor’s husbands. It’s a fascinating read. At the very least, people claim to feel more energized and it seems to be a cheaper and healthier (though not, unfortunately, tastier) option to coffee. It’s early days for me but I’m sold enough from what I’ve read to keep going and see what happens.
